The Salt and Ice Challenge

The Salt and Ice Challenge

In the strange hall of viral internet dares, the Salt and Ice Challenge became one of the most painful to watch. Emerging in the early 2010s, it asked participants to rub salt on their skin and then press an ice cube against the spot. The combination created a rapid freezing effect, dropping the temperature enough to cause burns similar to frostbite.

The “fun” part—if it can be called that—was to see who could withstand the sensation the longest. Social media quickly filled with videos of teens wincing, laughing through the pain, and showing off raw, blistered patches on their arms and hands.

Doctors warned that the challenge could cause serious skin damage, including permanent scarring, and in some cases, second-degree burns. But like many online stunts, danger only seemed to fuel its spread.

While the Salt and Ice Challenge never reached the same fundraising heights as the Ice Bucket Challenge, or the sheer absurdity of the Cinnamon Challenge, it remains a classic example of internet dares gone too far—where the prize was not fame, but an unwanted souvenir in the form of a burn mark.
